Saturday airtime, like clockwork
C. E. is a senior software engineer in Atlanta. She grew up between Accra and Houston and has been topping up her dad in Ghana every Saturday for as long as she has had her own bank account. He uses the airtime mostly for long video calls with his grandchildren, and the calls have a habit of running past the credit.
She had been buying about $50 of airtime a month for years. The $25 top-up that won her the runner-up tier was almost a rounding error.
A quiet verification email
The runner-up tier does not get a phone call. C. E. got the verification email at 11:08 on a Thursday morning, between two stand-ups, and read it on her second monitor while a build was running.
She replied 'confirmed' from her work laptop, opened the rules link, read it twice, and went back to a pull-request review. She did not tell anyone at the company.
"Bought 75 entries for $25. Won $10K. That was it."
Last student loan, gone
C. E. used $9,200 of the $10,000 to pay off her last private student loan, a Sallie Mae balance she had been chipping away at since 2019. The remaining $800 went into a small Ghana index fund a friend in Accra had been recommending for two years.
She still tops up her dad on Saturdays. The amount has not changed. The video calls are still longer than the credit lasts. She is fine with that.
